If you live near Kelowna, BC or plan to visit it anytime soon, there’s a good reason why you might want to boycott local tourism, businesses or wineries. It appears that the city is observing something called “Protect Human Life Week.” The city council has again caved in to the demands of some fringe pro-life group, Kelowna Right to Life. Instead of standing up for women’s rights, they have totally disregarded them in order to secure votes in the upcoming municipal election:
September 24 to October 2 has quietly been proclaimed as Protect Human Life Week in Kelowna.
It is the fourth consecutive year the Mayor Sharon Shepherd has granted the pro life proclamation at the request of the Kelowna Right to Life Society.
In part, the proclamation reads: “It is the intention of this proclamation to promote respect and protection to all human life, especially the infirm, the aged, the handicapped and the unborn.”
Sounds familiar? You might remember Ottawa’s Respect to Life Day, proclaimed back in May, which coincides with the annual March for Life.
You might also want to know this: Kelowna is apparently a traditional Conservative stronghold, according to The Abortion Monologues, and abortion services are provided at Kelowan General Hospital. Now, women’s rights and social conservatism don’t mix very well, we all know that. The web site of the pro-life group states that “Our great City of Kelowna ought not continue to tolerate the killing of defenseless unborn children in our own hospital.”
And this is how they do it:

MIght as well dehumanize us as well, Gabriel. You’ve already dehumanized unborn children and killed them off by the millions.
Marlon, I think you forgot to read our comment policy. Now, I don’t usually approve comments from pro-lifers (mainly because they’re shrill and not very well thought out and in this case, insulting to Gabriel), but this one made the cut since I will use it as an example.
So, Marlon, keeping in tune with my new comment policy, your comment will benefit the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada. Thanks for posting.
Never a moment’s rest. Social Conservatives are coming out of the woodwork, kind of like cockroaches. They also seem to understand a basic principle in politics: Strength in numbers and lobbying combine quite well.
